Secretary's Soapbox

Chris Geggus

Not much to report this month, other than to remind everyone to get their applications in for Wally Con on the first weekend in October. I already have reservations from some of the regulars, but we still have spaces. Please see the ad elsewhere in this issue for location, dates and cost. Bookings to me please.

I'm also asking for game reviews from anyone who might want to enlighten the rest of us as to the worth of some of the myriad of new games hitting the market. Whilst we no longer have Avalon Hill and many other manufacturers who have fallen by the wayside over the years, we do seem to have an ever-increasing number of smaller companies producing good, professional games of all shapes and sizes. Perhaps it's a sign of aging, but I only ever seem to hear very late of any new game appearing on the market, good or bad and I would really like to know earlier and also be given some guidance at to whether it is worth the investment. One thing that hasn't reduced over the years though, is the cost of these games, professional or desktop. Any sort of review (even two words) would be welcome. I don't want Despatch to become a review magazine, but something to your fellow members never hurts. Reviews to Kevin please. Did anyone acquire any games at Essen? That might be a good place to start.

Arthus has retired (recently I guess looking at his age), so has more time for gaming. Something I'm aiming for with utmost enthusiasm! However Arthur has told me that he is a complete beginner to the board wargaming hobby, so he would appreciate some guidance from our more experienced members as to what would be good games to start with and how to go about buying them, learning how to play and then finding opponents. AHIKS can provide the latter, but would one of our more venerable members drop Arthur a line with some pointers please (Murray?).
