18XX Convention
Barrington Beavis
 |
Over the jubilee weekend there was an 18XX convention from Friday, 31st May
to Tuesday, 4th June (designed to avoid all TV and jubilee celebrations!). I
think it could arguably be called the UK 18XX championships with 28 players (2
of who were Americans) taking part, including most of the top ones. The length
of the games ranged from 1 hour 30 minutes (caused by a bankruptcy) to over 12
hours. The games played ranged from the old favourites like 1830, 1856, 1837 and
1841 to new ones such as 18EU, 18AL (Alabama) and 18VA (Virginia) and even some
under possible development such as 18MET (London Underground). |
Medals were awarded for the best individual performance (i.e. how well you
thumped your opponents!) in six of the most popular games and among the winners
were Stephen Webb for 1841 (Italy) and myself for 1830 (north-east USA) and 1856
(Canada). Incidentally, the 1835 (Germany) medal winner was Kelly Willis, one of
the two Americans who demonstrated to me how to play the game!
The winner of the convention, you had to play a minimum of six different
games, was Lyndon Gurr with myself just scraping into second place.
